![]() ![]() The NMR spectrum ultimately shows how many photons were observed at a given frequency (chemical shift is proportional to frequency) Protons in different chemical environments exhibit different levels of screening, resulting in different transition energies, and as a consequence release different frequencies of photons upon relaxation. Protons are partially screened from the external magnetic field due to local electrons exhibiting an opposing magnetic field, as described by Lenz's law. The excited protons then begin to decay back to their ground state, releasing photons with a frequencies proportional to the difference in energy between the two states (transition energies). Normally, almost all of the protons are in the aligned state because it is lower in energy, but they can be excited into the higher energy state with a radiofrequency pulse. A proton has an intrinsic magnetic moment, and in the presence of an external magnetic field can exist in two states, either aligned with the external magnetic field, or opposing the external magnetic field. ![]() The spectrum is generated by observing the proton's spin flips. If there aren't many then the nucleus sees the external magnetic field more and so the the energy separation between the nuclear spin states is wider. If a nucleus is surrounded by alot of electrons they can shield the nucleus from the external magnetic field. So now we hit the sample with radio frequency photons and if the energy is right a nucleus can absorb the photon and flip its spin state. The stronger the field the larger the energy difference between these spin states. ![]() Now these two spin states have very small differences in energy, because of how they interact with the applied external field. Now the nuclear magnetic moments can either be aligned with the external magnetic field or opposed to it. So now we put all these nuclei in a large magnetic field. The neutrons and protons have magnetic moments just like electrons. NMR:Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Ok so we have some nuclei. So certain bonds absorb certain energies of IR radiation based on the atoms that share the bond and the particular way the bond stretches once is absorbs the photon energy. An infrared photon comes in and if it is the correct energy the bond can absorb the energy and start stretching or bending in different ways. IR: if you imagine chemical bond as two masses connected by a spring you can imagine that depending on how heavy the weights are and how stiff the spring is it will take different amounts of force to compress and expand that spring.
